Job searching can be tricky. Whether you’re looking for your first job, fifth job or changing careers, the entire process can be exhausting. We tend to take the job search process seriously and believe rejection is an assault on our worth. However, this isn’t the case. Before starting your job search, you need to look inward to understand your strengths, what you bring to the table, and what it’s worth.
The First Step: Complete Confidence
Confidence gets you far in life and it gets you even farther during the job search. It’s important to develop thick skin before your search because you’ll encounter some unpleasant people and situations. The best thing you can do when this occurs is to handle things with grace. An unresponsive recruiter or a disinterested interviewer is not the end of the world. However, the only way you’ll be able to let it roll off your back is if you stay confident in yourself and your abilities.
Establish Your Core Work Values
We all have values we hold dear and many of these values influence our work decisions. Although work values and personal values interconnect, your work values should be clear and constant when applying for new positions. Some of your values can be:
- Opportunity to learn new skills
- Open communication
- Respect among team members
- Work recognition
These values pertain to the company’s culture and training process. These are the intangible aspects of a company that you learn through asking questions and observing the work environment. Other values such as good benefits and travel opportunities are external values more aligned with company rewards.
No offer is final. Many companies list a salary range when posting a job, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept their initial salary offer. Do some research. There is a wealth of resources out there to help you learn what people with your skill set, education level, and job title are making. Entering salary negotiations can be a little unnerving, so prepare by having a mock interview with a friend. Take this time to learn the right ways to voice your expectations and engage in conversation with the interviewer.
