It’s easy to assume that those in charge – the leaders, bosses or role models we admire – have everything figured out, that they never need help. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone needs someone to look up to, someone to lend a hand or at the very least someone who can provide a sympathetic ear. Even leaders need mentors!
The Pressures of Leadership
Those in leadership positions have a lot on their shoulders. After all, the ultimate responsibility falls on them when it comes to a team’s successes — or failures. It’s up to the leader to keep everyone on track and obtain a successful outcome, whatever the task may be. If things don’t go according to plan, who gets blamed? Most often, the leader. Don’t underestimate the pressure that a leadership position involves, because it can be significant!
The Risk of Not Asking for Help
It can be risky for a leader to take it all on themselves and not ask for help, or not have guidance from someone they trust. Remember: Just because someone is in a leadership position does not mean they never need help! An important part of good leadership skills is the ability to delegate and ask for help when it’s needed. Otherwise, the entire process may fall off the tracks.
Leaders who don’t ask for help can experience stress or anxiety, perhaps worrying about what might happen if success isn’t achieved. Individuals might lose sleep or experience other physical manifestations of anxiety. Complete burnout is even possible, resulting in a total breakdown on the part of the leader.
Finding a Mentor
When a leader has a mentor – someone who they can take advice from, come to with questions or simply chat with – they’re far more likely to succeed, and lead others successfully.
Seek out someone trustworthy who you respect and admire; ideally, someone else who is a leader. There are different types of mentors, so first define your goals and what that person might do for you. Respect your mentor’s time and commit to following through on their advice. This relationship will pay off tenfold as time goes on.
