You have so many responsibilities that absolutely must come first – job, home, bills, and all the other seemingly endless necessary minutiae that make up life – that you may consider time to yourself a luxury you cannot afford. However, you should take time for yourself every day, even if just for a few minutes, to maintain your health and happiness. Think of it as putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others.

  • Recharge. If you spread yourself too thin focusing on your career/job search and everything else, you’ll eventually burn yourself out. Your body has ways of forcing you to take a rest if you push yourself without a break, so giving yourself regular time away from the demands can only benefit you. Even the longest-lasting battery needs recharging; you need to do this as well.
  • Reprioritize. As you try to juggle everything in your life and be all things to all people, you wear yourself down. Taking time for you allows you to attend to the rest of life’s responsibilities refreshed, energized, and with a positive attitude. We all know that attempting to do a major task when tired or sick means it won’t get done as well, and it will sap your energy even more. Taking some alone time will help improve your memory and concentration.
  • Reconnect with yourself. While that may sound a little too New Age for some, the fact is we get so wrapped up in everything else we sometimes forget to pay attention to how we’re thinking and feeling. That, in turn, allows us to ignore things we should take stock of, whether it’s a nagging lower back pain, the friendship we’ve let slip, or the desire to focus on making a career change. Spending time alone allows us to think more deeply and clearly … and often come up with solutions for some of those issues. “Alone time” allows you be you, with no game face on, nobody to please or answer to. We all need that.
  • Reestablish your quality of life. Our busy society has filled our senses with noise, either visual or aural: There’s almost always a phone alert pinging, a TV or radio playing in the background, someone needing something…. Yet we benefit from simple quiet, whether it involves taking a walk, reading a book, or taking a 15-minute nap. Or perhaps you simply want to go for a run or take a night out with friends. Either way, find some time to do what you want to do.

It’s not self-centered to take time for you; it’s necessary. So find some you time soon and make it part of your regular schedule.
