Sometimes the hardest part of taking a vacation is returning from the vacation. But rather than dreading getting back to the office after a week off, take a positive approach and acknowledge that you’re back to reality, refreshed and re-energized.

Ease yourself back in. Before leaving, most of us set up vacation messages on email and voicemail. Do that…but add a “buffer” day so you’re not bombarded with incoming messages the instant you get back. This allows you to listen to and read the most pressing messages and identify the items that need addressing right away. You may even want to tell your colleagues that you won’t be available your first day back for any but the most pressing meetings. Give yourself time to re-acclimate and organize before you jump back into the swing of things.

No need to hide the fact that you were away. Talk about your vacation to others if asked. It’s good to relive the relaxing time you had and discuss fun aspects of the trip. This allows pleasant vacation memories to bring calm and happiness to your work. And why not add a picture from the vacation to your screensaver or desk – simply glancing at it can spark good feelings during your work day.

Take your vacation mindset into the office. This doesn’t mean ignore the clock and show up in beachwear, but if you return from vacation feeling refreshed and energized, find ways to bring that invigorated perspective to your work. You may come back with a clear head that allows you to think more innovatively or be open to new ideas. And your mind won’t instantly feel cluttered with minutiae that too often clogs our brains and stops us from moving forward. If you spent your vacation outdoors and active, allow yourself some outside time during the workday, even if it’s parking farther away so you can enjoy a few extra minutes outside. Make yourself a playlist that reminds you of your trip and listen to it when everyday stresses begin to creep back in. Make a conscious choice to maintain your vacation zen.
