Did Pollyanna have it right? Can playing the Glad Game really help us become happier? Apparently, yes. Perspective really does factor in to whether we feel happy or not, and sometimes choosing happiness really does give us a more positive outlook on life, especially during the tougher times.

  • Make your own weather. As one educator put it, “As a parent, as a human being, as a team member, a boss, I create the weather around me…” and you can do the same.
  • Wake up each morning and choose to think of each day as a new opportunity to make the best of it versus just another slog. This also affects those around you, like a ripple in a pond. You can make your day sunny or rainy, depending on how you choose to look at it.

  • Happiness doesn’t simply happen. We think happiness finds us, but it’s our reactions that create happiness for us. We all know someone who does act like Pollyanna, staying positive even on bad days. Once you realize that happiness is a choice, you can make it happen for yourself more often. And you’ll see that you’ll have more good days, feel luckier and make yourself stronger and accepting when those negative situations arise.

  • It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether you choose to respond positively or negatively to a situation, that choice will affect the outcome. So, if you have a job you can’t stand and go in every day expecting to have a terrible day, you will. But if you go in determined to find one bright spot in your day, you’ll probably find that, too. That doesn’t mean you ignore challenges just to keep a happy face. Instead, deal with the situation with a positive outlook. You’ll find it much easier to deal with when you’re looking for the good rather than focusing on the bad.

Happiness really is a choice. If you want more of it, aim for that positive perspective. For advice how to improve your career satisfaction, work with the staffing professionals at Medical Professionals.
