Is Your Job Search Slowing?

If you’ve been on the job hunt for a while, it’s sometimes difficult to stay motivated, especially if the jobs you want haven’t come your way or if you’ve had interviews but didn’t quite make that final cut. However, you can (and should!) re-energize yourself so you get the most out of your search.

  • Review what you want. If a job search becomes rote, your motivation can definitely decrease. Bear in mind that even when you do get interviews, that mentality may find a way of slipping in, giving an impression to a potential employer that you don’t feel entirely motivated about the position. It may help to sit down and take stock of what sort of position you want. If you still want that job in sales, consider that your recommitment and a new focus of your energies.
  • Make up a new “to-do” list. Figure out your next steps and think of different ways to get to your final goal. While you may want a sales job, you may also want to broaden your search and consider a field you hadn’t before, or a new way to use your skills. To help shape your strategy:
    • How have you gone about searching?
    • Have you used all possible networking resources? You might want to add that component to your to-do list:
    • Attend a networking happy hour to get introduced through a mutual contact on LinkedIn.
    • Do you have the requisite skill set needed? Perhaps you’ll consider online or local classes.

Consider your list as a fresh way to approach the search in ways that you haven’t done before.

  • Work with a recruiter or staffing agency. You absolutely don’t have to go it alone in your job search. Recruiters and staffing agencies exist to help put qualified candidates with employers, so why not let the professionals do some of the heavy lifting? In addition, they often have leads on positions that don’t make it to the public, so you can get an edge there as well. A good recruiter will also help you get organized. Look around for one with a solid reputation and see how they can reduce some of the stress of the search.

New motivation will help put some life into a routine job search — and remember, employers often love someone who doesn’t seem “routine” themselves. Let your energy inspire you and your search.
